ABSTRACT

This chapter takes a critical stance in examining the interface of the Olympic Movement (Western and secular) and Islamic culture in relation to experiences of Muslim sports women. The way in which Western societies have embraced technological culture has desensitized and disconnected people, leading to the need and space for revivalist movements and new forms of spirituality. The chapter addresses the ways in which the structures and policies of modern sport interface with such Islamic body practices affect the lives of Muslim sports women. International sport governing bodies' dress code policies have provided a specific site for gender and religious discrimination. The complex interface of Islamic and Olympic sport cultures creates a web of influences on experiences of Muslim sports women. The 'Accept and Respect' declaration and 'Atlanta+' strategies are advocacy paths to the same goal for improved inclusion of Muslim women in sport.
