ABSTRACT
The capture of Lisbon in 1147 was of major significance in the advance of the Reconquista in the Iberian Peninsula. In order to consolidate control over this important military gain, the defence of the Sado estuary was crucial for creating the necessary conditions for both the conquest of territories further south and the settlement of new communities in the region.
