ABSTRACT

The last scholarly Hungarian monograph on the Hospitallers was published in 1925–28 by Ede Reiszig. Since then a small number of articles and other popular works have appeared in print; none of these have been the result of any further research on primary sources. It is hardly possible to produce appropriate comparative works before a more accurate picture is drawn of the history of the commanderies and the Hospitallers in this part of Europe. Hospitaller historiography has long been burdened with a serious conceptual problem. The appearance of the Hospitaller Order in the Hungarian Kingdom can be traced back to the middle of the twelfth century. The first known conflict occurred as early as 1207, when the bishop of Vác was informed of the rights that the Hospitallers enjoyed over their landed property in his diocese. There is no doubt that the Hospitallers had seized the lands lying between Csurgó and the River Drava.
