ABSTRACT

Italians did work on Rhodes in the sixteenth century, if to a lesser degree than initially believed, but if we look for a Rhodian Hospitaller architecture we must keep in mind that the foundations for its creation were laid in the fifteenth century. In the capitula issued for the construction of the new hospital on 20 March 1441 it was ordered that ten magistri muratores were to be retained at the building works of the hospital. The team would be provided with sufficient grain from the Order's granary, and the builders were allowed to quarry stone for the works from a specific site in the city of Rhodes. Morelli also participated in teams supervising building works in Rhodes and other islands. Rhodian Hospitaller architecture in the fifteenth century was as much a matter for the Order itself as for the local craftsmen.
