ABSTRACT
This paper concentrates on the often inimical nature of the relationship between the Republic of Venice and the Order of St John between 1530 and 1798. It is intended to propose a plausible explanation for the mutual distrust sustained by the two institutions and to focus attention on why such mutual antipathy was allowed to prevail so long.
