ABSTRACT
Like so much of the history of the Military Orders in the nineteenth century, an accurate account of the origins of The Most Venerable Order of St John has never been published. This paper begins and ends with a catastrophe for the English knights, but it should be remembered that thirty years later they were legitimized when Queen Victoria made St John an order of the British Crown.
