ABSTRACT

My subject has not been thoroughly researched by modern scholars, 1 and therefore my aim here is to offer a number of preliminary general observations. First, I am going to give a short account of the sources of Templar architecture, followed by a sketch of an average Templar preceptory using the example of South Witham. Then I am going to make a survey of building types used by the Templars, which will include an analysis of the plan-types of their churches and, finally, an evaluation of the architectural decoration of Templar buildings.
