ABSTRACT
Religious orders made frequent appearances in the romantic and epic literature of the Middle Ages, as well as in other literary genres which I shall not discuss here. In the thirteenth century their most frequent role was giving hospitality to travelling knights. In the Grail romances in particular, hermits and Cistercians gave spiritual advice to knights. Yet romances seldom depict religious persons in association with romantic love.
