Victorian Perceptions of the Military Orders

There are two different ways of approaching the subject of Victorian perceptions of the military orders: the image and the reality. This paper seeks to cover not only the Victorian manifestations of the military orders, but also how they were portrayed by contemporaries in literature, music and art. My main focus will be Britain, but to provide some context I will draw parallels from elsewhere in Europe.
