ABSTRACT
During the twentieth century, the world was blanketed by mass media and electronic communications while populations all over the globe experienced intense social and cultural changes, variously labeled Westernization, modernization, urbanization, secularization, industrialization, commercialization, and commodification. Mutually reinforcing, these processes overlapped in ways that made them potent constitutive forces of life.
