ABSTRACT
Popular music in Brazil is one of the world’s most diverse musical phenomena. Besides the internationally known urban samba and bossa nova, Brazil has strong regional expressions, plus pop styles ranging from roots-oriented original composition to contemporary rock and hiphop. Significant centers of production and consumption exist in Bahia, Minas Gerais, and other states, but the major activity occurs in Rio de Janeiro, the nations traditional cultural capital.
