ABSTRACT

Deep within the Amazon tropical forest of southeastern Colombia live the Tukano (Tucano), who belong to the Equatorial-Tucanoan linguistic phylum of the Macro-Tucanoan stock and the Tucano family of languages (Greenberg 1987 :383–384). The Tucano family includes numerous subfamilies, such as the Cubeo, the Desana, the Makuna (Makú), the Tukano, and others. The names Tukano and Tucano are pronounced exactly the same, but the former spelling here denotes all the Tucano-speaking people in general; when specific information is known, however, particular names are used.
