ABSTRACT

The Waiãpi (Wayãpi), whose language is included in the Tupi-Guaraní family, inhabit villages scattered throughout the northern territory of Brazil and the southern part of French Guiana [see French Guiana]. Their area is part of the Guiana region of South America. About three hundred Waiãpi live in the Amapari area of Brazil, and an additional 650 live along the Oyapock River in French Guiana.
