ABSTRACT

The Wayana inhabit a region bordering Brazil, French Guiana, and Surinam [see French Guiana]. They speak a language that belongs to the Carib linguistic family. Carib-speaking communities, including the Panare, the Wayana, the Aparai, the Waiwai, and the Tyrio, constitute the linguistic majority in the Guiana region (Rivière 1984:1–12).
