ABSTRACT

Located in the southern “cone” of South America, the Republic of Argentina is the southeast extreme of the Americas and covers about 2.77 million square kilometers of continental land. It extends westward to the Andes and Chile, eastward to the Atlantic Ocean, Uruguay, and Brazil, northward to the borders with Bolivia and Paraguay, and southward to Chile and the Atlantic Ocean. Its territory has a varied topography in which several cultural areas can be distinguished: Patagonia (Chubut, Neuquén, Río Negro, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego provinces), the area of the pampa (Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Santa Fe, the south of Córdoba), the area of Cuyo (Mendoza, San Juan, San Luis), the northwestern area (Catamarca, Jujuy, La Rioja, Salta, Tucumán), the central area (Santiago del Estero, the center and north of Córdoba), the area of Chaco (Chaco, Formosa, the east of Salta), and the littoral area (Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Misiones).
