ABSTRACT

The term Central America denotes the region comprising seven nations: Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama (map 10). To their north is Mexico, with 92 million people living in 1,216,510 square kilometers. The seven countries of Central America, by contrast, have an aggregate population of 32 million, only one-third as large as that of Mexico, and with 325,142 square kilometers of territory, about one-fourth the size of Mexico.
