ABSTRACT
Until the mid-1980s, the ruggedness of Dominica’s terrain and coastline made transportation difficult throughout the island. As a result, five distinctive musical cultures—northern, southern, eastern, western, central—evolved almost independently. Though each region has unique cultural traits, they all share one heritage, that of the peoples who settled Dominica: French, West Africans, and English.
