ABSTRACT
The political campaigns preceding St. Lucia’s independence from Britain in 1979 focused not only on increasing political awareness but also on promoting culture as the symbol of St. Lucian identity. The recognition and celebration of St. Lucian values and cultural practices (advocated in political speeches as a prerequisite for self-determination) reflected the influence of social and ideological forces at the local, regional, and international levels.
