ABSTRACT

The territory called Mithila does not appear on contemporary maps of India, as it is no longer a defined political entity. Today, “Mithila” refers to the area where Maithili is spoken. The linguist George A. Grierson, who popularized the term (though he did not originate it), described this territory as bounded by the Kosi River on the east, the Ganges on the south, the Gandak on the west, and the Himalayas on the north. It thus straddles the India-Nepal border (Grierson 1967).
