ABSTRACT
Devotional music forms part of the repertoire of almost every musical genre in Pakistan, and is performed and appreciated at every stratum of society. There is neither a special genre nor a special repertoire associated with the official state religion of Islam comparable to “church music” in the West. In fact, the concept of music for or in the mosque does not exist, for orthodox Islam does not sanction any form of musical performance in its services or prayers.
