ABSTRACT
The Punjab is located at the crossroads of high cultures (Indian, Central Asian, and Iranian) and world religions (Hinduism and Islam). It is part of South Asia, yet its name, meaning “land of the five waters” (Farsi panj ‘five’, āb water’), is of Iranian origin. Its musical culture is the product of synthesis and assimilation in both repertoire and instrumentation.
