ABSTRACT

Northern Afghanistan, which includes the provinces of Badakhshan, Takhar, Baghlan, Kunduz, Samangan, Balkh, Jozjan, and Fariab, is separated from the nation’s southern provinces by the Hindu Kush mountains and subsidiary ranges. About 1,290 kilometers of the rivers Amu Darya and Darya Panj form the northern border with Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Mazar-e Sharif is the principal city, with an estimated population of 150,000.
