ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Fang's diagram of the correlative structure of humans and the world, with homo nobilis at the summit. It presents Rahner's view of Christ as the perfect man from the perspective of transcendental anthropology, pointing out the similarities between Fang and Rahner and the latter's affinity with the unitive perspective of Chinese philosophy. The chapter compares and integrates the thinking of Fang and Rahner, thus bringing into portrait the other two aspects necessary for its completion: the cosmic and the historical. Fang Tung-mei designates “transcendental metaphysics” as a characteristic of Chinese doctrine of reality. Fang's diagram of the correlative structure of humans and the world is based on the idea of human transcendence. The idea of unity of humans and heaven, understood in different ways, is central to all traditions of Chinese thought.
