ABSTRACT

Transposition from the point-nosed Christ to the flat-nosed Christ - this may sound a little frivolous, but it in fact touches on the truth that Jesus Christ, to use St. Paul's words, “becomes everything to men. For nineteen centuries Christ was almost exclusively a point-nosed savior to the point-nosed persons of the world. The curiosity of flat-nosed humanity about Jesus’ nose cannot, however, be suppressed. Although they do not quite know how to put their uneasiness into words, the point-nosed Christ continues to bother them. In the course of time, a kind of schizophrenia has developed in the mind of many thinking Asian Christians about Jesus’ nose. Transposition from the point-nosed Christ to the flat-nosed Christ has taken place. In Asian works of art it seems that God comes to the people in Christ in more and more recognizable forms.
