ABSTRACT

The Buddhists make a great deal of the story of the enlightenment of Gautama who realized in a great moment of insight that he had attained to Buddhahood. It was under the Bodhi-tree that he saw his way of salvation. But the discovery of humanity as the image of God is at the same moment the discovery of man. Henceforward, Jesus must live as God in overflowing love to concrete men and women. The real God must now be seen constantly in human relations. In modern times great scholars even followed in the pursuit of this mistake in holding that God must be definitely in some place specially devoted to him, and isolated from the rest of the world. If Christianity is anything at all, it is the insistence on the duty of being responsible for the welfare, not only of one's own nation, but also of the nations of the world.
