ABSTRACT

According to the Christian doctrine, Jesus Christ has a double nature, being both divine and human. The original basis of the creed are the Gospels. In the four Gospels, the outstanding feature of Jesus is this dual nature of being God and man: Jesus as God's only son is a perfect deity and, being bom of Mary, has the complete nature of a human being. This chapter talks about that Mao Dun also abridged the stories in the Gospels which describe the conflicts between Jesus and his political enemies. It shows that Mao Dun, a novelist who advocates concision in literary style, hardly uses any superfluous word, so as to imbue each word with meaning. Democracy, patriotism, and idealism are the essentials of thought of ancient Jewish prophets. The Death of Jesus was written in Guilin on August 5, 1942.
