ABSTRACT

After the First World War, the Protestant missions in China continued to expand in membership and in all the main fields of Church activities. This chapter presents an overview of the mission of Reichelt, focusing on the way he presented Jesus Christ to the Chinese and on the theological presupposition of his mission. It provides a sketch of the life and works of Reichelt and reviews Reichelt's mission theology and methodology. Reichelt's intent to be a missionary, according to his aunt Miss Larse, was expressed very soon after he had begun to attend school. Reichelt seemed to be serious about his choice for mission work. Between 1920 and 1922, by much of energetic travelling and successful persuasion, Reichelt was able to obtain support for his new missionary enterprise from all three Scandinavian countries and from their Lutheran missionary agencies, including the Church of Sweden, the Danish Missionary Society, and the Norwegian Missionary Society.
