ABSTRACT

The introduction of the Christian faith among the Manchus is quite probably the least known and studied subject in the whole history of the missionary activity to the Far East. In essence, the reasons for this are two: the lack of adequate sources, and especially the peculiar historical and socio-cultural situation of the Manchu people. The testimonies of the Jesuits obviously concerned in the first place their missionary activity – the main reason justifying their stay in China. The evangelization of the Manchus not only had to deal with all the various well-known obstacles which missionaries typically faced with the Han Chinese. Manchuria as the dynasty's homeland and thus the recipient of particular attention by the Imperial court remained precluded to missionary activity up until the beginning of the 19th century.
