ABSTRACT

Existing approaches to analysing the synergism between corrosion and wear in tribocorrosion are reviewed, and their drawbacks are listed. A novel approach to that synergism for passivating materials is presented in this chapter. The novelty of this approach is the fact that the wear track evolves with time in a cyclic way from a passive to an active surface, and the reverse is also taken into account. The galvanic coupling between different surface states generated on passivating materials in sliding contacts is also addressed. A number of relationships are derived allowing researchers to express the synergism in tribocorrosion.
