ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the optimum processes for addressing the requirements for railway vehicle driving cab sightlines and develops a coherent and measurable framework for specifying/auditing cab sightlines for all types of railway vehicle. It presents the structured framework for integrating human factors design principles into railway vehicle cab. The chapter examines the gaps and inconsistencies in the requirements of existing Railway Group Standards with reference to good general design principles and human factors practices. To effectively address the above requirement for ensuring an adequate specification of cab sightlines the anthropometric ranges of the actual driver population need to be defined by the railway authority. GM/RT2161 identifies important issues that have relevance in the establishment of the minimum requirements that would give an adequate field of view for the whole range of potential drivers. The aviation approach is also aircraft role specific which was recommended for extrapolation to make cab type specific guidance for GM7RT2161.
