ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the migration phase from existing lineside signalling systems to a cab signalling system under a European Train Central System (ETCS) Level 2 regime. The ETCS is gradually being introduced on the European railways. The following premises and considerations were applied to develop the special dual mode signal aspect: existing Dutch railway signal aspects were taken into account when choosing the proposed variants. The experimental signal aspect was alternated with normal signal aspects, such as, red, yellow, green and twice by a completely extinguished signal. Two types of perception were crucial in the light of the remit: the correct perception of an ETCS signal aspect variant, and the correct perception of an extinguished signal. Signal Aspect Variant H9 is still a provisional design and has been installed on the Utrecht – Amsterdam line, the first line in The Netherlands to be equipped with dual signalling.
