ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of human factors analysis of current train drivers and the implications for the future. It presents a summary of the 'base' model of current drivers' tasks and the related human factors issues, and the drivers' opinions about future needs for technology, training and selection. A hierarchical task analysis of current train driver tasks was used as the starting point for the development of the base model. The background data and the structured interviews enabled the development of the base model using training requirements analysis programme. Freight train drivers' tasks are more affected by the variety of loads carried and therefore require more adaptable speed control skills. Route knowledge is critical because of the amount of time that it takes to build up, and it impacts on all parts of preparing for and driving the train. The physical skills for train driving are primarily hand/eyecoordination tasks.
