ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on the method and findings of one aspect of that, namely train drivers' use of lineside information in the regulation of speed. It focuses on the results from coding of data that concentrated on clues to the how and the why of the use of signs in regulating speed. A qualitative study gathering data on driver behaviour was performed with UK freight train and passenger train drivers of varying years driving experience. Published work investigating road vehicle drivers' use of signage has yielded interesting results, some of which may be transferable and add to the understanding of train driver behaviour. An initial cab ride was taken on a short suburban route to familiarise the researcher with some of the practical aspects of a cab environment and the infrastructure. On a global level the findings of this study suggest that train drivers use lineside information as cues that inform speed regulation strategy choice and development.
