ABSTRACT

The European Convention on the preservation of archaeological heritage (European Council, 1992) declares the need for implementing measures that secure preservation and maintenance of archaeological artefacts in situ. Due to this declaration, a number

of in situ monitoring projects have been carried out by the National Museum of Denmark (Gregory et al., 2002; Matthiesen, 2004). Experiences from these studies were implemented at the Danish sacrifi cial bog in Illerup Ådal, Jutland, a site that holds one of the largest and best-preserved Iron Age weapon sacrifi ces ever found in Northern Europe.
