ABSTRACT

Universities and scholarly institutions more generally in France have taken little or no interest in these types of music and have in no way contributed to awarding them an intellectual dimension Originally rock and its actors have occupied a clearly dominated position, notably compared to jazz and its own actors who, a few years earlier, indeed a few decades earlier, found themselves in the same situation as importers of a new musical genre into France. In comparison to the United States, Great Britain and indeed other European countries, France has long stood apart in terms of the difficulties experienced within the world of rock music. In more or less conscious contrast to the blissful love-affairs of nice, smiling stars, Rock & Folk developed a sense of the tragic, a form of almost morbid fascination with various rock stars whose moment of glory was as brilliant as it was brief.
