ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Peter Gabriel's collaboration with Robert Lepage. It focuses on the cultural and technological elements of creating the tours, and explores the ideas and philosophies on which the actual stage designs were based. The chapter also focuses on the idea that they play with different popular cultural elements and technologies. Gabriel and Lepage had been introduced by a mutual friend in December 1990, when Gabriel was working with Laurie Anderson and Brian Eno to develop theme park plans. Peter Gabriel's quest for intimacy, both on and off stage, has not always been a great success. As he seems to be constantly open to new people and ideas, he becomes easily distracted, often resulting in some kind of new enthusiasm. Arena technology was partially developed to provide the means for a modern version of Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk, a complete work of art.
