ABSTRACT

Peter Maxwell Davies's choice of source material is usually related to plainsong from the Liber Usualis as is well known, though this is of course not the only material which he uses as the stepping-off point for his precompositional procedures. There are no precompositional charts or sketch materials available for Sinfonia Concertante, whereas those for the Brass Quintet are quite detailed, although one has to sift out the sketches from those of Image, Reflection, Shadow with which they have been bundled. The plainchant material which is bundled with the Trumpet Concerto probably does not belong to this piece but is related to Resurrection which has no charts in the British Library collection. In terms of sketch material the first movement of Image, Reflection, Shadow is very rewarding – the score annotations are quite consistent on the sketch.
