ABSTRACT

The Maasai are semi-nomadic, initially and to a lesser extent even today, living under a communal land management system. The Maasai are an indigenous African ethnic group. They are the southern-most of the Nilotic-speaking peoples of Kenya, although the community and their land also cover vast areas of Tanzania. It is perhaps, a case of conquering adversity through art as more and more people are drawn to watch and admire what the Maasai have. The newcomers took advantage of their victory over the Maasai and took their lands. The Maasai are on record as a people who see the tilling of land for crop farming as a crime against nature. In fact, Maasai traditional prayers seem to have become part of the official programme during public and national celebrations. In a manner of speaking, the immortality of the Maasai as a race seems to reside in their rich cultural tradition.
