ABSTRACT

Trans-national crime has acquired an unprecedented dynamism and worldwide reach in the new globalized environment. Modern technological advances enhance the proficiency and adeptness of trans-national criminal activities including money laundering, cybercrime, trafficking in humans, drugs and weapons, piracy, and terrorism. This chapter examines the emerging trends in trans-national crimes and the threat they pose to national and international security. It highlights the menace of the crime-terror nexus and offers certain suggestions for stemming the political, social and economic impact of trans-national organized crime. The nexus between insurgency/terrorism and crime is the most complex and multi-dimensional threat to international security. Insurgents and terrorist organizations could involve in criminality to the extent that the line between their criminal and political interests becomes blurred. Trans-national organized crime poses a major threat to political stability, human security and development in vulnerable countries. Cybercrime threatens vital infrastructure and state security, steals identities and commits fraud.
