ABSTRACT

This chapter draws various strands of analysis around Buffy in order to show the ways in which as a text it must be understood as intermedia–that is, as a narrative comprised of, or fused between, moving image and sound, audio. This includes dialogue, effects, incidental, and narrative-related music—and that, as a text, its meanings are located only through the intermedial relationship of these components. The Buffy amateur music video productions work in some respects to "release" the visuals: firstly from their narrative sequence which provides a set of nodes for the structure of meaning over temporality–their location in a before and after; Then, more importantly, from the intermedial ways in which sound operates with visuals to provide and convey the meaning. In Buffy the statement underlying the narrative development of relationships is that normative, heterosexual coupling is not only difficult to achieve and maintain but borders on the unworkable.
