ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a professional knowledge for school leadership that is directly linked to a reconceptualization of leadership practice. It focuses on principal leadership in the context of cumulative annual cycles in the life of a school and asked how the craft knowledge that emerges from this leadership might be collected, codified, and shared more systematically. The chapter explores the holistic view of leadership with an analytical approach that focuses on separate components of a principal’s role and the knowledge that supports these components. The environment for learning includes those aspects of the school that have a direct influence on student learning. Student effort is the intermediate result that the several accomplishments associated with the school’s learning environment are intended to influence. Schools provide a variety of noninstructional services for students that are intended to support the student’s educational goals.
