ABSTRACT

In Italy, critical pedagogy arose as product of the events that took place in 1968, a historical turning point for Italian culture. The year 1968 became a symbol of deep cultural transformation that brought to life a wide protest movement led by young people manifesting against the existing ideological-political system. This student protest – fuelled by expectations and hopes for a better future – focused on the issues of anti-authoritarianism and participation, the ideology of knowledge and its dependence from the economic-political system, the free exercise of critical thinking and its social building power, and the realisation of the right to an active, critical, and participatory citizenship.
