ABSTRACT

The concern with understanding how education systems function and more importantly, with understanding the reasons why a large percentage of children are labeled as school dropouts and expelled from educational institutions, is one of the most pressing issues of today’s societies. We cannot overlook the importance of education and knowledge, as they exist within the new social models in which we live. We are dealing with a subject with a history that requires we question what type of society we consider to be ideal and, therefore, the society towards which we should direct our intentional efforts and actions. This always turns out to be a most controversial topic. Adopting an educational system model also involves expecting certain functions to exist within it, in order to bring into being the socio-political project considered most appropriate and logical in terms of theories, information, ideals, values and skills possessed by those who really have a chance to participate democratically in this debate, or in the event that this is restricted or forbidden, then by those within the structures of political power and government.
