ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine a teacher-as-researcher experience (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1993) I had several years ago in a graduate class at my university. The chapter includes how I became interested in conducting this work, the context in which the research took place, and the qualitative methodology that I used for the study. It outlines how personal stories shared in class nurtured the sense of community, and provided me with insights about my teaching. An examination, in particular, of the collaborative work of two students shed light on some important dimensions of collaboration, and the role inquiry played in the teaching and learning process, suggesting implications for further work.
