ABSTRACT

This chapter is a description of how I coached seven across-schools collaborative action research (CAR) teams that were experimenting with integrating the use of the test tasks, formats, and procedures of the New York State mandated tests into everyday classroom activities. The chapter also includes the products produced by the teams and findings of the action research activities of the CAR teams. All the CAR teams mentioned in this description emphasized the implementation of effective practices for supporting English language learners (ELLs) as they worked toward meeting the performance and content standards of the New York Public Schools. The chapter also includes a description of how I changed my method of teacher-inquiry coaching to be more clinical in nature as I sought to support the teachers as their coach.
