ABSTRACT

Mainstream middle school and secondary educators with English language learners (ELLs) students integrated into their classrooms are faced with the following three challenges, as discussed in Chapter 1:

How to make the course content comprehensible to ELL students in the class who do not understand the language

How to engage those students with the content, with their peers, and with the teacher

How to provide a safe, yet cognitively and interactionally stimulating environment
