ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the potential utility of accreditation as a quality driver and a quality indicator for the testing industry. It focuses on segment of the testing industry that supports personnel certification and licensure. State licensure boards in certain disciplines require that individuals be graduates of accredited programs as a condition of eligibility to register for state licensing examinations. Accreditation is becoming an increasingly popular tool to promote quality across diverse industries. Many governmental agencies are beginning to consider relying on accreditation as an indicator of quality in certification programs and to help both government agencies and consumers make informed decisions. Accreditation could benefit the testing industry in several ways. Medicine has long relied on accreditation as a public demonstration of quality. The strong interest of the international community to seek accreditation suggests the growing universal appeal of accreditation. Several industries have incorporated the use of accreditation programs.
