ABSTRACT

This chapter employs an international and comparative approach— as opposed to an exclusively North American outlook— on contemporary national and international Environmental education (EE) and awareness efforts. It reviews of literature on why EE and awareness is considered important for adopting more sustainable behaviors and policies. The chapter explores the state of global environmental awareness and presents various approaches that have been suggested to increase global environmental awareness and education in developing, post-Communist, and postindustrial countries. It presents a passage from Jared Diamond's recent book Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed concerning the massive increase in global environmental awareness at the same time people are facing massive global environmental problems. The chapter indicates that global environmental awareness and concern is relatively widespread across different cultures, regions, and levels of development, there are still many additional challenges as well. It discusses the future prospects and trends concerning the state of global environmental learning.
