ABSTRACT

Cultural and social anthropology, in the German-speaking world also known as Ethnologie, is devoted to the study of the 'man-made part of environment', to human existence in all its diversity. Historically, anthropologists studied the social and cultural organization of non-Westem societies. Good anthropology combines detailed empirical research with larger political and philosophical questions. During fieldwork the anthropologist attempts to take the perspective of the people he/she is studying. The subjective nature of the ethnographic enterprise received great attention in the 1980s, especially through the work of a number of American cultural anthropologists. Appropriation is an everyday strategy in the music world, ranging from the translation of lyrics to the mixing of whole music traditions. The global music market follows a structure of common difference. Most of the global categories and standards circulating originate in the West and the West makes a sustained effort to assure their survival, but they also spread because people elsewhere appropriate them.
