ABSTRACT

A 'style analysis of popular music' is by no means a categorization of artists and musical pieces, but is concerned with the working out of significant ideas, an essential point of reference with identity-forming relevance for a significant number of persons. 'Style fields' are the objects of a 'style analysis of popular music', as both aesthetic ideas and social realities. A musical style represents not only a certain system of musical logic but a configuration of signs, symbols and meanings, which concerns the special world view of style-forming artists and their publics. Unconsciously exposed to the powers of nature, there is at least one possible chance for survival: sitting together, listening to music, having a drink. The very essential connection of regionalism and international consciousness is expressed in Austrian folk rock through the mixture of Alpine triad harmonics with Afro-American rhythms. In the romantic mystique of the landscape Hubert von Goisem assumes the position of one on holiday, a tourist.
